Laser dentistry is one of dentistry's latest advances. It promises bloodless and painless soft tissue surgeries and that too in most cases without any anaesthesia.

Why choose a dentist with a laser?
Lasers in Cosmetic Dentistry

Do your teeth look really short? Are your gums showing a lot when you talk or smile? Have your medications caused your gums to grow over your teeth? If you answered yes to one of these questions then you may benefit from gum recontouring. This procedure is yet another example of how lasers are a valuable tool producing predictable and very cosmetic results in dentistry.

Conventionally, dentists had to fully anesthetize (inject) your gums and use a scalpel to remove the excess gum tissue. Bleeding was an issue and the final position of the healed gums was less predictable. With lasers, an anesthetic gel suffices to prepare you for the procedure and the action of the light beam prevents bleeding from ever occuring. The gums will not change position during the healing process and postoperative discomfort and healing time are minimal.

Laser Gum Recontouring: What Is It?

Laser gum recontouring is a treatment whereby Dr. Mehta and Team use a special dental laser to sculpt the soft gum tissue. The most exciting technology in dentistry today, the soft tissue diode laser allows us to help patients with uneven gum lines achieve even, pleasing smiles. By skillfully applying laser energy, he balances the symmetry of teeth, gums and smile line in order to enhance the overall aesthetics of the mouth.

In addition to helping patients with uneven gum lines, the laser specialist at Dr. Pankaj Mehta’s Dental Care can also correct the following cosmetic problems:

  • Gummy Smile: Patients whose teeth appear disproportionately short due to excessive gum tissue benefit tremendously from laser gum recontouring that removes some of the excess soft tissue.
  • Short Crowns: By applying precisely targeted laser energy, teeth structures can be lengthened by removing some of the gum tissue. This procedure creates a stronger foundation for the placement of crowns and also enhances the appearance of these restorations.

Why choose laser whitening over led whitening?

Laser tooth whitening is much faster and much more effective than led (zoom) bleaching. The time taken is also reduced from around 60-75 minutes for in office led bleaching to 30-40 minutes.

Differentiate Between Laser and Non-Laser Tooth Whitening

Laser

The laser wavelength output is synchronized to the proprietary whitening gel, which increases efficiency and minimizes the amount of energy required to produce maximum whitening. This results in shortened treatment time and increases effectiveness while eliminating the heating of teeth that can result in post-operative sensitivity.

Non-Laser

Ordinary non-laser whitening systems require longer treatment times and higher energy output because of their inefficiencies. Non-laser whitening devices use just a tiny percentage of the polychromatic light's energy. The rest of the energy is wasted as heat and light, which is absorbed by the teeth and adjacent tissues, which often results in intra-operative and post-operative sensitivity.

Gum Depigmentation (Gum Bleaching)

Gum depigmentation is a procedure where the dark melanin pigments which make your gums look very dark and unattractive when you smile are removed without any anaesthesia or bleeding.

Why choose an orthodontist with a laser?

Laser in orthodontics (braces).

One in 6 patients have a thick band of muscle called a frenum in between their front teeth that prevent the closing of gaps.

  • If the patient needs a frenectomy (freenum muscle removal) it can be done in an absolutely bloodless manner without any stitches and superior healing and nao pain.
  • Many a times in children certain teeth do not erupt due to a fold of their gum obstructing the eruption of teeth.

orthodontist

With the use of a laser the fold of gum can be removed easily, bloodlessly and with no anesthesia.

canine

In the absence of a laser facilty the traditional scalpel and blade is used which is a bloody procedure and requires an injection.. Also the healing is slower.

  • Any gum overgrowth caused during braces can be removed without any blood, anaesthesia and any stitches.

Lasers in Root canals

  • Extensive research all over the world has shown that the bacteria elimination in a root canal system is 50 times more effective with a laser than conventional irrigation medicines.
  • Thus the success rate of root canals is almost 100%.

Laser in Implants

Lasers are used during the second stage of implant recovery.
With the help of a laser you may not need any injection.implant recovery will be bloodless and painless and your treatment will complete a lot faster with excellent tissue healing.

Gum disease and laser therapy

Gum treatments

There are a wide range of applications for lasers in the treatment of gums. Whether you need a deep cleaning, gum recontouring, a nodule removed, a frenectomy, or a tissue sample, our laser offers a great treatment option. Most patients love the fact that these procedures can be performed using only topical anesthetic gel and do not require any injections.

Deep cleanings

Laser deep cleaning is used as a conservative approach to moderate gum disease where conventionally a periodontal / gum flap surgery is advised

Periodontal (gum) disease is a wide-spread condition. This infection is caused by bacteria that live in the pocket between your gums and teeth. Left untreated, periodontal isease will progress and eventually result in tooth loss.

Due to its minimally invasive nature, laser gum therapy usually does not require any injections to ensure complete comfort. The dye is used to stain the bacteria and diseased issue and will guide the light of the laser, which is attracted to the pigment. Next, Dr.Mehta will treat each pocket individually and ensure that all problem areas are addressed thoroughly. Upon completion of this step, your whole mouth will be cleaned using the conventional methods of ultrasonic instrumentation This will leave your teeth and gums clean and fresh.

A recent study published by the Journal of Periodontal Research shows that a combined course of gum treatment involving laser therapy as outlined above is more beneficial than non-laser scaling and root debridement alone for the treatment of chronic periodontits Gum and bone disease (periodontal disease) is a common infection that causes bad breath, sore gums, receding gums and bone and loose teeth. Sufferers may be putting their hearts at risk because the bacteria can attach to heart valves.

Laser gum disease treatment does not involve cutting and sutures. It is much less invasive, usually painless and without swelling. Healing and recovery are very fast and you don’t need to take extra days off work. This will save you time and money.

Laser in Sensitive Teeth and Fluoride Treatments

Lasers help people who suffer from sensitive teeth. When combined with a fluoride treatment, certain dental lasers can reduce sensitivity for many months. The effectiveness of this treatment varies between patients.

Dental lasers assist in the uptake of fluoride within teeth. These enhanced laser fluoride treatments are longer lasting and provide better protection for your teeth against decay.

Lasers in Ulcer & Canker Sore Relief

Another fascinating soft tissue laser treatment for fast and effective healing, is the sterilizing of ulcers, canker sores and cold sores. Cankers sores, ulcers and other lesions are primarily tender due to the bacteria that are causing the sore. By zapping away the bacteria and sterilizing the area with the Laser, patients find the discomfort level drops rapidly and the healing time decreases, even after just one visit. Many clients find after the Laser treatment, they tend to produce fewer lesions. Soft tissue Lasering of oral lesions is a very comfortable visit and usually requires no injections.

TMJ disorder

Does it hurt to open your mouth or chew? Do you wake up with headaches? Do you have pain near your ears that radiates into your temples? Did your mouth ever get locked open or closed?

If you answered yes to any of those questions then you may be suffering from Temporo-Mandibular Joint Disorder (often called TMJ or TMD).

TMJ issues may be related to tight muscles surrounding the joint and / or an inflammatory process inside the joint capsule. The way your teeth bite together can also adversly affect TMJ health. Dr. Mehta and team will perform a thorough examination before prescribing treatment including the use of nightguards, grinding of select teeth, medication or the use of low-level laser therapy (LLLT).

Due to its non-invasive nature and the absence of side effects, Dr. Mehta and team often employs LLLT as a first line of defense against TMJ issues. The laser is used on a low setting and applied to the outside of the face without contacting your skin. No anesthetic is needed and improvement of symptoms will be felt immediately. A followup treatment may be necessary two days later.
